Exclamation Thinking about buying a 65' 220SE coupe.

While driving around I came across a 1965 220SE. The car has some body rust, nothing major, bad paint, worn interior, and 140k miles. It stared with a bit of hesitation but stayed running. The guy want's 7K for it. Is it really that valuable? Are the relatively rare? I'm not used to Mercedes this old and don't know what to think of it. I'm pretty sure I could get the price down... Is this car worth 7K or any where around that price?

There's one on ebay right now selling at $7100.

Mercedes-Benz : 200-Series - eBay (item 130482957290 end time Feb-14-11 17:00:00 PST)

The one you're looking at looks a little rougher, though. You will want to inspect it underneath very carefully if you want to buy it.

They are a very desirable car. Be prepared for a lot of expense sorting it out.

If it has any visible rust it is certain to have rust where you can't see it. If you are serious put it on a lift so you can do a underbody inspection. Chassis parts are common but everything else is exclusive to this car-nothing on the body exchanges with any other car including glass and bumpers. Don't make a impulse buy on on of these-spend time seeking out a clean car with history.
Good luck!

I owned a 1964 and had to replace all the fenders due to rust. The area above the headlamps is especially prone to rust. Check to see if these have been repaired. Lift up the trunk mat ans check out the floor. That rubber mat traps moisture in the trunk.

I would agree. Don't buy this car without shopping around for better alternatives. Fall in love with "a model or type of car" not with "a specific car of that model/ type". It is always cheaper to buy a good one than thinking you are going to safe by fixing up a "not so good one".
