No ID Plates

I have found a 450SL to buy. I have noticed the car has no id plates or tags on it. The car is registered with an engine number and VIN number. Any advise would be appreciated as I like the car but am a bit concerned.

No I.D. plates or tags means a stolen car. Whether it is really stolen or not. Any law enforcement stop or inspection will end up with the car impounded. Usually the local or state Motor Vehicle Division will do an inspection of the vehicle to establish its legality. You can "N.V.I.N" the car (New Vehicle Inspection something or the other). The D.O.T. will do an in-depth inspection, verify the VIN and cross check the engine serial number. If it is stolen then it's impounded and you are on the hook.

Don't mess with it.

If the VIN number on the post or dash has been altered or missing then there is a problem. Sometimes other id plates get removed for paint, then forgotten to be replaced. Or painted over. But again if someone removed the vin or it doesnt match the one on the title, don't do it.
