Help to get my Merc W115 ready for my wedding!

Hi there, and thanks for taking time out to read this topic.

With only a few months to go before I get married, I thought i'd get a service done on the w115, ther car was having problems running on idle anyway, thought it was probably the carb...anyway a few things they mentioned on the report from the MB Specialist (AndyGayle, West Midlands - UK) was :-

1) The idle speed compensator requires replacement

any idea what this is (link/part number would be great), and is it a big job?

2) The carburettor diaphragm requires replacement and full setup required

correct me if i'm wrong, is this a rubber part for the carb?...

are these parts easy to obtain? and any pointers would be great...I dont post much on this forum, but I do come on here most days, great forum , and i hope I hear from you guys soon, really would love to get her running well!

thanks again.

p.s. Am I ok to drive still? Runs a little rough, but I'm not doing any lasting damage am I?

Sorry for the silly questions.

Harry.

Sorry I should've been more specific, its a 220/8, 2.2 petrol, with a carb that doesn't seem to be the original...some pictures below

Is this the same as a stromberg carb? if so can I order a diaphragm for a stromberg 175 CD?

Stromberg/Pierburg carbs are the same, first, check the carb's oil tank to see if there's ATF left, if not fill with ATF, (all season) fill it up to the bottom end of the thread of the oil tank cap not all the way up otherwise it will be bloody mess. Stromberg/Pierburg carb without the ATF, the engine runs like crap, the fluid helps to dampen the piston inside the carb. Do that first and send me your feedback ok?

Morning guys,

ok, check if there was any ATF in the carb, and it was some in there, up to the thread marks.

Ran the car yesterdat, still doesn't idle properly, (was idiling with high revs) and exhaust was spitting out pretty bad, so took it for a drive, seems ok...i did open the carb, diaphragm looks like it hasnt been replaced in a while...shall i replace that?

doesn't explain why its idling funny though, when reversing out, on occasions it cuts out on me...never seems to do that when in Drive, going forwards.

Still don't know what an idle speed compensator

im not great at this I must admit...apologies again for my lack of knowledge!

harry,

Replace that diaphragm with a new one, now you said the engine spits, right? Pay attention to ignition system, check and clean or replace (if necessary) the points, plugs, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and condenser, set the basic or static timing at about 10-12 degrees ATDC(after top dead top center) without vacuum attached to the distributor. Do you know these stuff, sir?

The idle speed compensator stabilizes the idle when the engine is under load (when AC is on, the selector is in D or R in automatic gearbox, and power steering when steering the car out of the driveway all at the same time), improperly adjusted idle compensator will result to engine stalling or the idle is way too high.
