I want to replace the blower motor resistor pack on a 1986 280GE (W460 SWB). This controls the low and medium fan speeds with a three speed blower. I have removed the instrument console and the various dash parts, but the tech sites i have just accessed would suggest that I now have to take out the whole heater assembly, which in turn seems to imply draining the radiator and disconnecting the hoses etc etc . Is this the case, or is there a secret shortcut so I can get in and replace the resistor pack without disaassembling so much of the truck?

Sorry to bring you the bad news, but yes; you'll have to take out the whole heater and then you'll be able to replace the heater. It's a huge job, for such a small part, but since you allready have taken apart the dashboard, the worst part of the job is allready done! PS: When you now have taken appart the dasboard, be sure too cheek up the transaction from the wiperengine to the actual window-wipers, and add some grease to the joints.
