Good News to Report: The darn thing runs!!!!!!!!!!!
A very long day (started shortly after 7:00 AM and finished 8:45 PM). I just got back from taking it for a spin. More power then I ever remember the thing having and virtually no smoke. I didn't take it on the freeway so I don't know about the full throttle situation. Silly me, it didn't even occur to me, but of course at 240 is 10% larger in displacement so the pump would need to deliver more fuel.
Boy what a bear it was. The pump wasn't delivering for the longest time by hand turning, rotating with the starter freed up 3 of the 4 sections, but #1 was barely pumping, so I timed with #4 instead. Alls well that ends well.
Govert, thanks so much for all your help, it was invaluable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should consider writing a manual for these old cars, your explanations and illustrations are great. I guess in a way you have - an interactive version. But still you could probably reach a lot more folks in a web book or something.

Glad to hear that the diesel has sprung to live again. Reminds me of this scene:

YouTube - Das Boot - die Auferstehung

at 4.15

About the book: it is already written, the excellent Factory Service Manuals by Mercedes-Benz.

The smoke test is done by accelerating on an incline in third gear starting at 25 mph and proceeding to the highest possible speed (shown by the III mark on the speedometer). Have an assistant driving behind you or watching you as you drive by. The smoke should not be visible for more than 1 meter (slightly less than a yard) behind the car and should not be black. If so, screw back the full-load stop on the pump for 1/4 or 1/2 turn. You could also screw back the maximum opening of the throttle. Black smoke is unburnt diesel = $$$$ leaving your tailpipe.
