Good News to Report: The darn thing runs!!!!!!!!!!!
A very long day (started shortly after 7:00 AM and finished 8:45 PM). I just got back from taking it for a spin. More power then I ever remember the thing having and virtually no smoke. I didn't take it on the freeway so I don't know about the full throttle situation. Silly me, it didn't even occur to me, but of course at 240 is 10% larger in displacement so the pump would need to deliver more fuel.
Boy what a bear it was. The pump wasn't delivering for the longest time by hand turning, rotating with the starter freed up 3 of the 4 sections, but #1 was barely pumping, so I timed with #4 instead. Alls well that ends well.
Govert, thanks so much for all your help, it was invaluable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should consider writing a manual for these old cars, your explanations and illustrations are great. I guess in a way you have - an interactive version. But still you could probably reach a lot more folks in a web book or something.
