W114 / 280C - Newbie purchasing questions.

Hello everyone,

I'm a new member and in the market for a w114 (280C).
My girlfriend's cousin had a pretty beat example in New Jersey that I fell in love with on visits. I recently moved to Laguna Beach CA, so I'm looking for one to use as a daily driver and gradually fix up and give it a mean look that I know it's capable of. Lower stance, euro spec lights, etc... I have seen a few online that look killer.

I have a few questions for the group.

A. I know the M110 mill is supposed to be pretty solid, but are there any big watch outs when I'm looking under the hood. Rust prone areas etc?

B. I would love to find a great performance oriented mechanic in the LA/OC area to help gradually restore the car, MAYBE even add a supercharger to the M110 or do an engine swap.

C. About performance... has anyone had any experiences with blowers or swapping the MB V8s into these cars. I have been told the 560SL/SEL running gear is an almost direct fit. I would love to fit a 5 speed transmission as well.

D. Any advice about interiors? Every car I've looked at thus far has had cracked, sunbaked dashboards. Can replacements still be had? Also, has anyone had success with getting OEM upholstery and carpets from MB suppliers?

Thanks in advance.

Adam

Welcome. W114 shares the same sub frame as the SL and SLC coupes which had v8's installed so it should technically feasible to mount a 4.5 liter v8 from a 450SL. The US spec 4.5's make about 180hp. If you can find a Euro spec M110 engine, it will make 185hp so consider that too.

Good luck.

With best regards

Al

Hi Adam -

Depending on how you feel about more vintage interiors, consider a 250C also. M130 engine instead of M110, might be a minus for you.

A. Rust: All of the common locations. Front and rear windshields are likely to leak, water from the rear windshield ends up in the trunk, often trapped under a rubber mat. Water from front winds up in front passenger footwells. In CA you can find one without rust, which will be far cheaper than fixing one with rust.

D. You can't get OEM interiors for this car - too old. You can possibly get a new or at least good dash. 114 and 115 dashes are different, as are gas and diesel dashes. Every interior piece of the car besides the dash and center console is coupe-unique. You can't put sedan seats in a coupe. Also, the glass is coupe-unique including front and back. And the back bumper is coupe-unique.

Before you take the dash out, make sure that the heater fan works. There is one fan for the heater, a second fan for the AC. To toggle between the two fans, you turn the TEMP knob ALL the way to the left. This activates the heater fan when you turn the fan knob. If the TEMP knob is anything except all the way to the left, the car assumes you want AC and the AC fan works. If the heater fan doesn't work, it's a fairly big deal to replace it.

Feel free to drive to Pasadena and take a look at my RED 1971 250 C. It's very stock, probably not what you like, but I'm probably going to put it up for sale in the next month or two after I fix one or two little things...
