A W108 280SE 4.5 for $25 per month maintenance is an exception, not a norm, if the car is actually a daily driver IMHO. I wasn't suggesting a new car. My single-mother-unemployed sister-in-law needed a car and the family pitched in and bought her a $5000 7 year old Mazda Protege with 21,000 miles on it. It was a very logical and practical purchase given that she doesn't have a mechanic and needed an economical car.
If I average the costs of my W114 (a less-complicated car than a W108 in many ways), I would say that my maintenance costs have been about $175 per month. Perhaps that's deferred maintenance: windshield seals, front, rear brakes, tires, trans flush, etc.
There isn't a cost argument that supports a 40 year old Mercedes that is actually going to have miles put on it in my opinion. If there IS a cost argument, it would be for a 115 240D or 300d, or a 123 240/300/d/cd.
