need help on 72 4.5l v8 not starting!

hey everyone im having problems starting my 1972 280se its the 4.5l v8.
i purchased the car about 2 months ago an had no prior problems with it running or anything. all of a sudden about a week ago i drove to the store to get some food then when i came out and tried to start my car nothing happened. When i put the key in the ignition and crank it to turn on nothing happens. all the electrical works such as lights, radio. but when i go to turn the key nothing happens, when u turn the key you don't here the sound of the starter clicking. so long story short, I got the car back to my house and now that's where it sits. so THEN I starting doing some homework and thought it would be my solenoid so i replaced that and still nothing happens when im inside turning the key... BUT I can jump the car by putting the those wires together under the wiper fluid reservoir and starts up and runs no problem! Its Like nothings wrong with it at all Idles great like before this problem! what the hell is wrong with my car! I also already check fuses all are good, could it be a ground or bad wiring?? idk, but much help is needed i feel it could be something simple but not sure since this is my first Mercedes. Any advice would be helpful! Im trying to get my mercerdes back on the road again.

The ground strap from the engine to the frame is located at the right rear of the engine. It's hard to see from the top. If you can get it on a rack, get it up and have a look. They can get dirty and gummed up with oil and road grit. That's my guess. Good luck!

ok so you think it might be a ground? does that ground strap go to the firewall when im underneath it? I will check that out asap. Also I noticed that the break and generator light stays lit on my cluster without the keys in it!?? it never use to do that. Im starting to think its a short or open circuit?? maybe ignition.. not sure
Thanks for the help

from working on it today I noticed that the battery holds charge to the car and never goes off! i have constant power to the car at all time even when the key is not in!! this is not good! it never use to do that before. When I take the key out the ignition, the car will still run totally fine, the steering wheel still locks though when u move it without the key! could it maybe ignition problem? she starts up right away when I jump the starter wires with a needle nose! grounds check out so far!

Sounds like you need to start looking at the ignition switch (where the key goes) as the problem...

Another possibility is that you are not fully in Park. It took me ages to figure it out and how I found out is that I put the car in Neutral and tried cranking and it started right up. My transmission bushings are shot, don't know about yours...
