1972, 280 sel 4.5 108 restore

I have a dilemma....

For about fifteen years I have owned a 280 SEL, Loved this car.It began to smoke badly about 8 years ago and I pulled the motor and started the restoration. About 4 months ago, someone stole the disassembled motor and tranny from outside my shop... yes, no kidding... stole. I have this in the darage sitting there looking at me.... what to do....

any suggestions..

Thanks

Do you plan on continuing your restoration? I don't think M117's are that difficult or expensive to come by. look on Craigslist. someone might be parting a car with your desired engine/trans.
Good luck with your project

Not sure how much of a hurry you are in or where you live, but I am in Northern California and plan to pull my engine/trans out of my 1972 280SE 4.5 over the xmas holidays. Engine runs fine but I am going to try and put in a GM crate engine into the thing. About 96,000 miles on the motor, and an oil leak somewhere, the car is pretty new too me and I really haven't had a chance to dive into it yet.

I've got a 3.5 that needs new rings. It's also been in storage for a while...

The motors are plentiful, it would just be palletizing shipping (about$400) and checking the motor before installation.
I got one so cheap locally once I just had to buy it to have a spare. Still have it and maybe will never need it.
The expense will be in disassembly and check-out and parts. I have about $1500 into one including valve job.
