Which to get? Diesel w109 or w123 First Mercedes

Always drove a bimmer. Have an 06 3-series and I hate it. Too modern and too many things to break. I love the look of the w109 / 114 diesels but I have heard the w123 is virtually indestructable. Are the 109's and 114's just as good. Are they any more expensive than a w123 to repair. Being an older car will they have more problems than a 123? I drive alot and want a diesel model as I hear they last longer. The main thing I worry about with a 109/114 is maintenance costs and frequency of problems associated with an older model. Am I going to be at the mechanic more? I appreciate you guy's feedback!

Greetings:
Being the new owner of a W109 I have done a lot of research. I am pretty confident they did not have a diesel motor in the W108/109 body. There might have been someone out there who did that after market, but not stock from the factory.
I do believe it is the most beautiful Mercedes sedan ever made, however!!

There were no diesel 108/109 cars. The 5 cyl diesel came up in the mid 70's for the W116's and W114 models.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Looks like im a bit off. Well I guess my question is are the w115 models as reliable as the w123's and what should I expect when looking for one. I really need a reliable car as I have a long commute each day. Thanks

It's kind of apples and oranges... I have a 114 coupe and a 123 wagon. Both are reliable, both can have expensive issues. The 123 being 14 years newer than the coupe has a lot more things to fix. If you want a reliable car to put lots of miles on, a 123 is great. In my situation, it is more comfortable than the 114 but that is probably because the seats are in better condition, the A/C works, etc. For driving, I prefer the 114, but that might just be because the front suspension is in better condition.

I wouldn't go in the direction of 108/109 for a car to put lots of miles on.

If you want simplicity, get a 240 D or a 300 D. If you want to drive over 75 much, get a 300 Turbo Diesel (not a 116 car - more maintenance). If you want to haul stuff, get a 123 wagon.

Currently: 1967 250 SL, 1963 220Sb, 1965 300SE Lang, 1971 280SE parts car, 1972 Alfa GTV, 1965 Alfa Duetto, 1993 BMW R100R
Past: 1971 250 C, 1985 300 TD, 1967 250 S, 1968 280 S,1981 300 D, 1982 280CE, 3 Facel Vegas, Borgward Isabella Coupe, Alfa 2600 Sprint, Volvo P1900 (yes), numerous less interesting Volvos, ...
