280S Hissing Sound When Braking

When I apply the brakes on my '68 280S I hear a hissing sound. I'm new to the car (and to Mercedes) but I seem need to be pressing a bit too hard on the pedal.

Any help would be appreciated.

There is a filter and a seal at the rear of the booster. You will have to remove the booster and the brake pedal pin, or do it from the inside of the car. It's not critical to do it now but a search of the forum might reveal the fix, or search the DIY links at the top of the forum.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Hissing and a hard brake pedal are signs of brake booster failure. You'll have to do as wbain says to properly diagnose the problem.

mine did that then I replaced the front caliper and it quit. Check for leaks throughout the brake system before pulling your booster.
