I replaced my Solex with a Weber, and I couldn't tune the thing right. I went from 17mpg on the highway to 8, and there was nothing I could do to lean the mixture well enough. I tried jets, I tried timing, all kinds of things. It just never ran the same.
If you find a carb that is a direct replacement for the solex, and is designed to work directly with that engine, I say go for it.
In retrospect, I wish I had bought a rebuild kit and done the job myself. I'd try NAPA autoparts, the Mercedes Classic Center, or do a key word search in google. Someone out there has got to have a step by step instruction manual too...
