HELP! Glowplug broke when driving

Sorry if this is a dumb question this is my first diesel car and this was on my first drive in it the questions pertains to a 1966” 200D with an om621

I was driving north bound Interstate 5 in WA state , I was accelerating in 4th gear coming up to about 50mph when I started to hear what sounded like an exhaust leek I backed off a little bit and the sound went away then so I put my foot back down and it made a loud POP sound fallowed by a rhythmic popping sound Very load almost like a rod knock, I let it coast as I pulled off the road open the hood and found the glow plug had broken and the pencil part was sitting out of the block with the rest still in the side of the block, appeared as if the center got blown out
2 different friends of mine both certified diesel mech’s told me that I didn’t need to be worried about the Popping sound as it was just all the pressure forcing its way out of the glow plug hole, since the sound went away without throttle and low engine speed

Questions: is has this ever happen to anyone else? And if so is this a common thing if you replace the old loop style glow plugs with the newer pencil style? What may have caused this to happen ?

Thank you for your time in reading this thread

I have heard that the pencil upgrade plugs are not as good as the old loop in terms of durability. So im sure it was just a faulty glowplug.

Sometimes if injectors are not good, they will spray directly on the glow plug and that is not good for the glow plug (or the prechamber).

It happened only once to me, but not during driving. I tried to remove an old glow plug out of an engine and the front part was stuck in the engine, the rest came out.

Glowplugs can also become fatigued and break when people foolishly spray starter fluid in the intake to help fire it up on a cold morning or after sitting for a while. I'm not sure why a pencil type plug would be less sturdy, as these basic designs have been in use for the last 30+ years with very little changes.

I have a complete set of used pencil type plugs and hardware from my old '73 220D w/OM615 engine if you're interested--cheap. I believe they're the same design. I'm in Olympia
