I recently had the system recharged on the exact same system and, while it was originally charged with R-12 we found that there was no way to test of leaks with this type of coolant so I had two options, charge with 1lb of R12 @ $40/lb w/o checking for leaks and possibly venting the entire amount into the air or retrofit for R-134a and check for leaks. I chose the second option and fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, there were no leaks. The drawback? If I had went ahead and charged it with R12 I would currently have a much more effective AC. The system is designed to run R12 and as a result, retrofitting with the less effective R-134a has left me with an AC system that is rather ineffectual. Sorry if this is TMI just figured I'd relay some options.
