Help with bulb replacement in 1969 Euro (vertical) headlights

Does anyone have experience changing lightbulbs in old (1969) vertical Euro lights? Once the glass is removed does the reflector come off or does the entire unit need to be removed from the bucket to change the bulb?

You don't need to remove the glass. Just undo the 4 Phillips screws that hold the assy to the fender. The bulb holder just twists and you can remove the bulb...

Thank you so much. The next task is to get the replacement bulbs to fit in the holder (not an exact match as the new ones have three ears versus a solid flange - the three ears almost, but not quite, match up with those on the reflector).

My solution for that was to melt the solder and separate the base of the old bulb from the bulb itself; l put the base of the old bulb back into the reflector. Then I cut the three ears off of the new H4 bulb and inserted it through the hole in the original base... reassemble, and viola... H4 bulbs in early euro housings.

That is a very clever solution.

On close inspection I found that one of the bulb ears fit into a small notch in the reflector (at 6 o'clock). Then the largest ear was close enough to fit into the retaining ring slot with the reflector's ear, and I could let the third bulb ear push against the reflector without interferring with the retaining ring and still attach the retaining ring to the other reflector ears.

However I will not toss the old bulbs, nor your kind advice.

Thank you!
