Road Trip, California to Kansas City, 1971 280se

Thought you guys might be interested in seeing some pictures from a recent road trip. Trip was about 1,800 miles. We took the northern route, highway 70. We left huntington beach california, stayed in vegas for a few days. The car is a 71 280se, fuel injected, auto, 82,000 original documented miles. It did very well, cruised at 80 no problem, even got it up to 100 mph a couple times going through utah.

The a/c worked fine until i was going through the desert and the compressor decided to explode. Pulled though the rockies great as long as i kept decent speed. Some of those hills i think any car would have some trouble though. Overall never really missed a beat.

Good looking w108 dude. I have a '71 280sel. Of late I have been forced to drive it about 40 miles round trip every day for work. At first it really worried me, but 1 fuel pump later, it's all good. It gets me there every day, and I get comments on it every day too. Quite the ego boost. Great job on the road trip. Love all the pics too.

Great pics Blue Shark, thanks for sharing. Nice to see you're out using the car as it was meant to be used. More people ought to do it.. the joy of a road trip, and a great looking, comfortable car to do it in. Nice work!

Great pics. Thanks for sharing. What a great idea, taking a nice road car on a road trip.
I have a question for you. When you were out on the road doing 80mph, do you know what kind of rpm it was turning? I have a '72 250 that I haven't actually had out on the highway yet, but at 55 or 60 she's screamin' pretty good....no tach in it. It has a 4 spd auto trans and it sounds like it needs to shift again. I may just be used to the modern cars that are geared very high at highway speeds.
Thanks for any feedback.

Awesome, putting miles on a car that was meant to be driven. I have a relatively low miles older Porsche 911 and drove it from Chicago to San Francisco and it was the smartest thing I ever did. It was a joy to drive and enjoy. Your photos remind me of that trip.
