Is This Car For Real?

Hello everyone! This is my first post, so bear with me.

I came across an advertisement on Auto Trader Classics for a "Factory Production Model" , 1974 800D Turbo Diesel Limousine.

I cannot find any information on this car other than what is stated in the advertisement, and, therefore, am concerned that it is an aftermarket stretch with false decals. They do look authentic, and it is a unique find even if it is not "factory."

I will refrain from posting the link, you can find it at auto trader classics if you want. I just wanted to know about the authenticity of the seller's claims. Thank you!

Michael

I have decided to add the link, several photos are posted including a clear shot of the decals, I'm sure some enterprising person could create and 800 D and make it look authentic, this certainly does. The description indicates an Inline 5 Diesel, likely the motor for the 300D...with the added weight from the stretch modification I'd imagine the car is a bit of a slug without a larger motor.

In any case, I appreciate the responses, Thank you!

M.

Hmmmm 800D I have never herd of. 300D yes. 800d? Did the person do a motor swap or something? Maybe a 8.0 V10 Viper engine

No but seriously I have never even herd of it. Are you sure its not a 300D?

No offense meant but I am assuming that either there is a typo or you might have mistakenly read the figures "300D" to "800D". The 3 and 8 could look similar if not clearly typed/read.

Diesel limousines are not common but you see them in Europe. I'm sure there are some in the US, but I don't recall seeing one.

I'm with the other guys--the 800 was either a typo or you're misreading it.

A 300D limousine would be an interesting car, and it might be rare, but it's not likely collectible or worth much. If it is a stretched wheelbase, it isn't a "factory production" model any more than a stretched Lincoln Town Car is a "factory production" model. Mercedes did make some limousines and they were technically factory made, but the coachwork was farmed out and the final assembly was done in a MRZ plant.

The Grosser Mercedes (600) had several limousine variants that could be ordered through the dealership, but they were coach built if the bodies were modified, I believe. This may be a diesel version of the same sort of ordering process.

Good luck.

Oh, and just to note, I'm not considering the purchase, just found it to be a curiosity. I've been trying to learn as much as I can about my vehicle and the models prior, there is so much out there!

Thanks again.

The "800" may have been the coachbuilders touch to differentiate it from a "300"...still same-same.

No different then the coachbuilder 126's that were labeled "1000" ( 1000SEL )

It looks like a factory lwb car. MB made these and they were popular back in the day. When I lived in Jordan in the early 90's, these served as Taxi's bus type think (ride share deal) that would take passengers from the Capital of Jordan (Amman) to Damascus or Beirut.

With best regards

Al

Actually I take that back, this is not a factory car. The factory cars had the door in the middle which did not touch the wheel arches so this is something that was custom made.

Here is the real deal:
