Nice 240D or should I hold out for a 300D?

I'm considering the purchase of a '77 240D for around $2500. The interior is nearly perfect and the exterior is in excellent shape. It's got about 147k miles. Is $2500 a reasonable price? I drove the car today and was of course not surprised that it takes approx. 11 min. to reach 60mph. I even had it floored on a freeway climb and chuckled as all the other cars dropped me. But no matter, this is a Buddhist vehicle, I understand. I just need to know what I'm getting myself into. Are 240Ds normally so loud? I've nothing to compare it to. Also, when idling, I noticed the whole front end of the car vibrating? Is this normal or am I a noob? Should I hold out for a 300D?

There is a specialised forum about the 1976-1985 W123 model you're talking about:

W123 E,CE,D,CD,TD,TE Class - - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

A 240D or 300D should make about the same amount of noise when driving on the freeway and that is considerably more than modern cars.

Whether you should get a 300D or 300D Turbo depends on your temperament, as you said, the 240D is a Buddhist car, a 300D Turbo is fast enough for highway driving and climbing. A low-level 240D has fewer options that can fail.

The whole front end vibrating isn't good, could be the rubber motor mounts, or the diesel engine needs some adjusting.

I used to own a 300D and my father-in-law a 240D: not a lot of difference between the two, you quickly get used to wide open throttle driving, while the world passes you by.

A turbo model is far more satisfying & driveable and available in the more luxurious S class, but you seem to have the mental outlook required for ownership of a 240D, so go for it!

I always get in trouble when I bash diesels...

My preference is for the newer, turbo'ed ones. More zing. Either way you go, you'll be getting a car with a bulletproof engine that'll last longer than the car itself.

Good luck!
