Seeking advice on buying 1972 280 SEL 4.5

Hi folks - I'm thinking of buying a 72 280sel 4.5 that has 90K, really faded paint, no blowing a/c, and what the owner says is a really bad leak in the power steering hose. Is that leak an ominous sign of more trouble? Owner asking for $4500.

Also, what are the things to look for with these models. I hear that the maintenance is $$$$.

MBCA's mag just posted a buyer's guide for the W109. You're correct in the assumption that maintenance can be expensive, especially if the previous owner has not kept the car up like they should. I'm going to move this from the W123 forum to the Vintage Forum where those who are more in the know can chime in.

The owner is asking way too much with those kind of problems.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

The 280SEL is a 108 - thank God you wouldn't be dealing with the air suspension of a 109.

Power steering hoses can be replaced relatively easy, but I agree that $4500 is too much. With faded paint and no AC, I'd offer $1500, if that.

How's the rest of the car? Any rust? Is the engine in good running order? What about the interior?

Yes, I kind of thought so, but was not sure by how much...

Thanks for weighing in... the rest of the car is absent rust. Interior a 10, and 80K on the odometer, though that does not jibe with the faded paint job.

So... it sounds like a 72 280 sel would have to have good paint, working A/C and heat and good interior and low mileage to command $4500?

Plan on replacing everything made of rubber if you want a reliable driver. Is the sellers milage claim backed up by documentation? Otherwise it could be 180K, 280K etc. The maint history is more important than the actual miles. Could work out to be a really nice car with a little work.
