60's SL Roadster w/ Modern Parts

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew about any companies that take the body of a classic 60's or even 70's SL roadster and puts in modern suspension, engine, 6 speed trans, and all the goodies in it. Id love to have a car that is super reliable, can handle very well, push to the edge, and have the classic look.

I know I read about a company in Car and Driver that does that, but it was a bunch of years ago and I cannot remember their name.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Alex

That looks awsome. I'm looking for a convertible though and possibly one that is already finished. I am not much of a mechanic, but can handle basic stuff myself.

I really would like the body of like a 60's 250SL or maybe early 70's 280SL(they look very similar, almost identical). I could see it in a nice silver or dark blue with red leather interior and a black dash, steering wheel, carpets, and top. Custom leather with heated seats for cool fall nights. Xenon headlamps in what would look like the original lights. A car like that with a the current production 3.5 V6 with a 6 speed manual would be great. Some nice cross drilled and slotted brakes with a proper suspension for excellent cornering would be ideal. With regards to electronics, I can do without electric windows, but would like a modern stereo and maybe a small screen that would come out of the dash. I would want the car to look close to stock but with a bunch of hidden goodies. The important thing for me would that it would not look cheap with stupid rims tinted windows and an ugly whited out/smoked lights, gold accents or stars everywhere. Ive seen too many people turn their benzo's into japanese looking fast and furious crap.

That is really what I would like. I wouldnt want any thing but a mercedes star on the back and on the grill. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what I woudl like. I know there is a company that makes these cars, I just cant remember the name.

Good luck with that.

Here is a great resource for 113 information.

Pagoda SL Group - Index

There is a lot of information on different members performance upgrades if you choose to work with the original car. Just my $.02 but if one were going to modfy a 113 I would rather see a modification to the original car rather than a radical modification. A well sorted 113 is fairly capable in it's stock form.

So it looks like Mechatronik is what I was looking for. Those are pretty amazing cars. Its funny though, getting a nice one with all the goodies ends up costing more than a new SLS. Looks like I've got some saving up to do. Thanks for your help guys. BTW 3.5 Tony, you are very correct about the w113 being very capable and a radical modification would be shameful if done in a cheaply done and looking way.

Gary Ensor in Winchester KY has fitted I believe two Pagodas with 5.0 euro M117 engines. I saw one and the job is very well done. Gary is a very good professionnal who really knows his stuff and has the reputation to be reasonable with prices. If you're serious you could contact him:

Silverstar Motorwerks

Winchester, KY 40391

You also have Hatch & Sons who have fitted 3.5 M116s in Pagodas: Hatch & Sons Automotive, LLC.

In my opinion the best option for a Pagoda transplant is a 4.2 M116: light, small, and some good potential.
