Why do I have a column shifter?

I have a w114 280 and it has the shifter on the column. I have yet to see another one with one? What is the difference in my car and the ones with it on the floor?

No difference - same transmission but different shifter linkage. Same thing with the 108's - some had shifters on the column, others on the floor.

You could order your W114/115 with a floor or a column shifter, manual or automatic. Only the (rare) five speed was only a floor shifter.

The W123 with automatic transmission could be ordered with a column shift, but hardly anybody did that.

We had a 73 280 back in the 80's. It had the column shifter & I saw a few others around the Seattle/Portland area. Ours looked much like yours, light Ivory with a blue leather interior. Great model Benz.

Here is a picture I took:

W123s with automatic transmission could be ordered with a column shift.

I've read that there were Finnish taxis with manual transmission and column shift (also can be seen in the EPC), but I've never seen them.
