I am the proud owner of a 1979 450SL as of this morning. When I start the engine, there is a sorta loud hum coming from the rear of the car. It doesn't seem to change in pitch or loudness as I accelerate the car. I asked the previous owner and he said it was making that noise when he bought the car a couple of years ago but it never seemed to affect the operation of the car so he just turned the radio up and ignored it. I'm guessing a noisy fuel pump but don't really know. Any ideas??? The other initial item is the passenger door does not close tightly. I tried moving the striker plate as much as possible but didn't help. I know this car is 31 years old but I want to do what I can to make it as good as possible. The door not being tight will let water in if I can't fix it. Ideas???

Your fuel pump is buzzing. The in tank screen may need to be replaced, the check valve may need to be replaced or a new filter is in order. Then again, they may all be good and you need a new pump. There is a prescribed flow rate, consult the CD's.

As for the door, consult a qualified shop.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant
