Tuning an M130E for a W108 280 SE..?

Hello chaps

Sorry if this has been covered before.

I am the recent owner of a smart W108 280 SE. I have just been round tidying up the odds and sods - new o/s sill, holey exhaust etc - and am left with a clean but totally stock car.

Being unable to keep my hands to myself, I am wondering whether there is any way I can uprate the M130 FI engine...? Are there any tips and tricks, short of a turbo, to up the BHP? What about shocks/springs/brakes?

I await your wisdom...

Ben

I'm not real familiar with that engine. Air suspension is always a fun thing to do. Tons of ways to upgrade brakes. Paint? Sorry cant help with the engine. my 280sel has the 4.5 EFI engine.

There's a thread in this forum on Megasquirt conversions. I've never had a lot of interest in doing such a thing, but the conversion seems to be pretty straight forward.

Help my memory a little - yours has a 6 cylinder mechanically injected engine, right? I was never too familiar with the engine types ...

leave the injection as it is for now. Start by increasing the compression with new pistons and get the head flowed to improve the air inflow .
A swap to a to a 280SL cam will give you a higher performance output without affecting the driveability.
An upgrade to a megajolt ignition is necessary to map the ignition properly and release a few extra horses.
Dual 3-1 exhaust manifolds with a 4" exhaust (or dual 2 1/2" ) pipes and correspondingly lager mufflers to get the exhaust out without restriction is also needed.
If you don't want to spend the money on higher compression, look for a toyota supercharger with ther electric clutch. This will give you the option of supercharging when you want it. the megajolt can be mapped to tune the supercharger on of off as needed.

The trans will be OK as it is.
I mentioned the injection, although the electronic guys will hate me for this, but the MFI is better because the fuel is injected at 200+psi,something you cannot achieve with electronic injectors and this results in perfect atomization.
The fuel delivery is determined in the pump with a 3D cam. to fet higher fuel thoughout the range, you can get the 3D cam modified by Gus pfister at Pacific Fuel injection .Attached are AMG's FIRST mercedes efforts on a M130 engine No less with a price list of mods available in 1969.

Wow, I missed these responses when they were first written. I'll get onto it now!

Especially the exhaust. I patched up my holey manifold, but I'm struggling to find a replacement. Where can I get dual 3-1 manifolds from? And 4" pipes?

Thanks

Ben

Wow I did not know that these mods were available for the M130 engine. Unfortunately, mine had the MFI removed before I bought it. I have a side-draught carb modified to the MFI intake. I know I have only about half of the HP but I run it to work every day driving 70mph just takes longer to get there. Thanks for the info if I can ever get my MFI restored.

MFI

The M130 is megasquirtable in any case. Best would be a inlet manifold from a 250 CE D-jet-car for this projekt. Triggerwheel in distibutor 32 x2 with optical sensor.
In germany is a 280 SL engine with 3.200cc with 238 DIN HP (about 270 SAE?). Special crank, cams, pistions, ported, balanced and oilcolled pisitons (from dieselengines TD).
The SL engines and the 300 SEL (28E) had more performing cams from std.

Easiest way get a M130 dobble cam engine out auf a 280 E W114 with D-jet and Megasquirt it (Cams with AMG spec. by Imotec available) .
