What is this hose and why does it exist? (zenith dual carb w/ pics)

On a zenith dual carb system I found this hose underneath my air filter housing just kinda flopping around.

It should be connected to this part of the filter.

Connects to the hose here.

Leads down into a connection between the two carbs.

It looks like it should be something to feed the fumes back into the top of the carbs. Am I right? What happens when it's not connected?

*starts tracking down a clamp to hold it*

Hi Eric,
my 1968 230S has a similar hose, and I believe it to be the crank case breather.
As engines suffer wear and tear, the piston rings let small amounts of burnt gas into the sump, which pressurises it with oil fumes. They have to go somewhere other than pollute the atmosphere, so there is usually a hose or a pipe to redirect the fumes into the carburettor intake, 'recycling' them.
It would be best to restore the connection...
