the most common failure (i'm guessing) would have to be leaks...can't imagine anything else being dominant.
Mine is electrical, with a switch right behind that metal petal. If I were you, I'd just retrofit that with an electrical. You can just find a switch that'll work in that location for $5 (max) and wire it in. My fluid pump is under the fluid reservoir.
