Hi, If you follow the W111 mods thread there are several chassis.conversions mentioned.
First there is the Autoschmiede Trick, use a w126 Coupe for a w111 Coupe swap. You can use the front with inner wings up to the A pillar, weld on the Dash-Pillar structure of the Coupe. use inner sills from teh W126 and the outer from the W111026. Rear inner wheelarch from W126, outer with the wings from the W111 and the C-pillar and rear structure. Autoschmiede use from the fixing of the diff (W126) an the W111 rear sturcture. (If you want fotos send PM)
Seconde: use the W111 front, the M120 will fit, because its smaller in the V than the M119 (do not fit for 7 cm), in this case the M113/2 is the better fit. Rear and with fixing-points from the W124 (chassis panels will be a straight fit). The old fronsuspension functions well with the new rear end, told me M. schmid from Austria (he made a Coupe with E55 engine and w124 axle).
Other is to take a w124036 chassis, shorten it for 5 cm in front of the rear bench and cut all pillars (same work than autoschmiede) and fixing the upper W11026 parts on it.
Mechatronik use a normal W111026 chassis with modified springs and adjustable shocks. Engine W113 with Auto-tranny NAG up to the E55 engine.
For your case, looking on your m126 experience, you should go this way. In Us the prices of the w126 are low and many cars around.
Next winter I will do something similar, when my 3.5 coupe will run in everyday use my 500 E W124 will change clothes. I bought for some bugs a 200 TE with sunroof. The cut is on then half A-pilar (factory cutting points), B-pilar and in front of the rear bench (drilling out the welding spots). So the front and sills and tunnel will be 036 the rest stationwagon from the TE.
At the End I am close to the manual tranny conversion with W210 (420 E) bellhousing (automatik-separable), getrag 265, 3.5 Flywheel modified for M5 clutch (same diam 240mm) and outer M119 starter gear.
A V12 w111 coupe is the way you've to do it!!!!!!!
