Indeed, it's a very rare car, but way too far gone to be restored.
I've had my 1967 300 SEL with the M189 engine for over 10 years now and from experience I can tell you, EVERYTHING for this engine is very expensive.
Looking at the car in the ebay ad and doing a quick calculation what the car needs, it's definitely not worth restoring it.
Mine is a 2 owner, completely documented car with 110k miles, original paint, orig. leather (it needs the front seats redone), upper end of engine redone, air supension redone, a/c working, wood and chrome good, etc.......and IMHO it's worth maybe 8.000.-- on a good day. I hope I will never have to sell it, though.
BTW it must be a 1966 or 1967, because the 1968 300 SE had already the 2.8 liter cast-iron engine installed.
