manual tranny into a 109 w/ a 4.5

recommended donors? I was thinking some sort of SL. Would, and I know this is heresy, some other marque be a better choice?

Performance parts for w126, r/c107, w201, m117, m119, m102, m104 and few other things.

Reproduction 17" Penta wheels coming soon.

I'm curious as well for future reference...not a fan of the 3 speed at all.

Not so much heretical as idiotic. Why would you put a manual transmission in the most luxurious sedan Mercedes produced this side of the Grosser? It's like putting Flowmasters on a Bentley.

Except for a very few (a dozen or so) 350SLs from the early 70s, there is no such thing as a manual transmission SL. That includes R107, R129, and R230.

If you're planning to build a replica of the red pig, you need to start with a 6.3 rather than a 4.5.

Some other marque, I think. I meant for the idea, not as a transmission source.

unless you have a spare 6.8 laying around (the motor the had, not a 6.3) I am going to run a 4.5 for now. This is not going to be the "I love it stock and want more hub caps" thread, just looking for idea and experience on this. I have seen a couple of people do it.

I'll take the 6.3 if Jack doesn't want it.

And how does a manual take away from anything? Is a cd player, non-stock tires, non-stock headlight bulbs, or other upgrades taking away from the 'luxury' aspect of the car? My car is a three speed auto, and it reaches third very quick. This car, to me, would be more luxurious (certainly better) if I could use gear ratios to better utilize the torque into horsepower.

just tossing out ideals/possible leads. i don't have any 1st hand experience, and generally don't like to post on the internet unless i am certain w/ 1st hand knowledge.

So for what it is worth, i have come across ford t5 to 6.3 adapter plate. i had it saved on my last laptop which died a spilled drink induced death. i wanna say there was a chevy auto to 6.3 plate too. I came across both of these plates while thinking of things to stuff into my 27 ford tudor bodied hot/rat rod.

i cant comment if the 6.3 and 4.5's use similar bell housing bolt pattern characteristics--as neither engine is relatively common to me and are a solid 15yrs older than I. So old tech is new to me in that regard. only 4.5 i have is in the car, and i don't plan on pulling it until it blows.

however, i would think the manual tranny found on the m116 would work too. that's just my speculation. but may be worth following up on.

I think a mob called Big Boys Toys here in Oz did a manual for the 6.3 Not sure about 4.5 though - perhaps do some googling and emails and see?
I don't think it is idiotic, do what you want.

don't get me wrong, I would pimp a 6.3 all day long, that is just later down the road. Wouldn't mind finding a 6.9 either. This is a car I am build for road racing (endurance racing) so a slush box just won't do. People need to be free to experiment, there is more than one option that just how it came out of the factory. If this was the pinnacle of perfection, MB would have stopped there.

I'm afraid you're wrong. The R107 manual examples are fairly numerous, especially the 2.8 and 3.0L 6cyl versions. Also, the R129 300SL was not only produced with a 5spd, but imported into the US in such a configuration.

I'm starting to wonder about your motives as this is not the first time you posted patently incorrect information.
