The four speed G76/27 manual trans, bellhousing, flywheel etc. out of an M116 engine is a straight fit on a 4.5 engine, and works well.

Actually, I'd like to keep it automatic. I'm looking at a 6 speed automatic getrag, like out of a Chevy truck, or a Corvette...

Do a search of GGR's posts to see the work involved in fitting a manual trans.
Because a country like the US and it's car market had a big proportion of automatic trannys, doesn't mean that they are rare in the rest of the world.
I have driven enough later manual trans Mercs to know that there is Zero advantage in having one. A better alternative is a Tremec and the various options available mean you have the correct ratios, shifter positions and so on to make it really nice to drive.
The Red Pig was an Automatic and those of us who own /owned a 6.3 will know that these are superior to most manual trans and can be shifted manually so they can be driven like a fourspeed . Also, because they don't use a torque convertor but a fluid coupler there is so appreciable power loss .
