If you're smelling fuel, obviously there is a leak somewhere and the vehicle should not be driven any longer until the source of the leak is found and repaired. It could be an extreme fire hazard. The fuel pump pumps fuel from the gas tank to the carburator or fuel injection system. If it completely quits working, the vehicle won't run any longer. With that in mind, it could be something as simple as a leaking rubber fuel line somewhere in the system. This would be quite inexpensive. If the fuel pump is bad, it will be a little more costly, but should not break the bank. Have your mechanic show you where the leak is so that you can observe it first hand, and then decide your course of action.

You have a very desirable car ( W111 3,5 coupe) . Make your mechanic order a new pump and the correct rear fuel lines from mercedes and make 100% sure he replaces ALL of the rubber fuel lines on the engine. This a Djet equipped engine and the fuel runs at 28 PSI (2bar) . The fuel pressure can cause Old lines to burst and the car to catch fire. I have seen plenty of leaky hoses on Djet Equipped mercedes so your situation is normal.
