I am not certain but there won't be much change out of $50,000. There is another on the m100 site which has swallowed over $150,000...and isn't running yet.
M-100 Message Board - Justins 6.3 project with pictures..

One of the other guys i knew, who has passed away ,spent $220,000 on a car he bought for $50,000. He ended up with a very nice car which is now locked away in an estate dispute (along with several other desirable mercedes).
These are the 'rare' 6.3's though, being RHD because there was only 790 odd built. ;-)
It isn't necessary to spend this sort of money though, a good car can be had by simply going over the suspension, brakes body and general engine works to ensure everything is roadworthy ,then get it out and enjoy it.

For reference,

this motor came in a complete, beat, rusted, W109 6.3
$1500, tow it home and strip it complete, dispose of the carcass.
Gotta have spare parts.
