Problems removing neutral safety switch from 72' 250c

Can someone tell me if I need to drop the transmission on my 1972 250C to remove the neutral safety switch. I tried to remove the NSF but there is not enough clearance between the gear selector shaft coming from the transmission and the floor panel for the NSF to come off. It seems the shaft is about 1/2" too long to remove the part. This doesn't seem right to me as I'm sure this part was designed to be removed without heavy work involved. Any advice would be appreciated.

If it's too close it sounds like an engine mount has collapsed too. Undo the trans crossmember and use a hydraulic jack to lower the rear of the trans slightly . This will allow the switch to come off the trans. You can also fit the new shifter bushes easily at the same time.
