Need a Title For a Barn Find

Can anybody tell me how to get a title for a car that has not been titled for about five years, maybe longer? I found a 1974 450SEL that has been sitting in a barn for at least 4 to 5 years. The original owner has passed away 5 to 6 years ago. The car was sold at auction and then resold again before title was processed, but auction paperwork was not given to the last purchaser. The person who bought the car at the auction had moved out of state and cannot be located. The person who bought the car from that person tried to title it, but could not without the auction paperwork and the state kept the original title. This person has offered to sell me the car, which is in perfect condition except it has been sitting for several years - no dents, dings, or scratches, interior like new for $500. Before I buy the car, I need to see if there is a way to get a new title that will not cost me an arm and a leg.

Can anybody help?

Yes, indeed, we're all experts on the details of Arkansas law.

Seriously, the ONLY way to get a title is through your state MVD/DMV or whatever they call it there. Each state has different laws. There may have some information on your state's website, or else just look up the number for vehicle registrations, call them and ask them how to start the process.

In the few states I've dealt with it the process is fairly similar, submit paperwork, provide notice, if you can't notice someone then you may get a provisional title that becomes permanent after a period of time.

Good luck and post pics!!

Go to your DMV. State laws vary.

Good luck.

Usually you can apply for an abandoned title. Tow truck companies and wrecking yards do that all the time. If you get stone walled by the State just ask a tow company or wrecking yard operator about the process.

If it's not broke it dosen't have enough features.

Go to your local DMV and find out the exact procedure. Preferably get said procedure on paper.

Hi,

look here:

http://www.its-titles.com/

I've worked with these people many times and I can say only good things about them.
I don't know how competent the DMV in Arkansas is, but in CA you mostly deal with complete idiots and therefore it's almost impossible to get a title with no paperwork. WA DOL would be another possibility but you are too far away.
Good luck
