we were able to tear into the car yesterday, and yes, the nut that attaches the flange to the shaft had loosened, and was no longer forming a connection. tightened it up, and all is good. will be getting a fresh nut to replace the old one, and a bit of maintenance, and will be back on the road! thank you for all of your help.
