Not getting the power I should...HELP!!!

Since I got my 67 250s it hasnt had power to pull the hills. They arent terribly steep but I know it should go faster than it does floored in 2nd gear. It has the 2.5 in it. IT does fine in the flats, just doesn't accelerate the best. Second gear floored on a hill and it feels like the car almost comes to a stop. What could my problems be???? It's not the power steering or air condishoner dragging it down because I pulled the belts from those to check that already. Could a bad waterpump cause that much of a power loss. I have noticed a little wobble in my waterpump pulley I think its from bad wp bearings so I have a new one of those on the way. THANKS!!!

I doubt the waterpump would bog the engine down that much - I'd check the transmission first. Hows the flat acceleration? Or top speed?

top speed takes a while to reach, no way it could happen in the hills though, acceleration is ok on the flats, dnt know what to compare it to because ive never driven another one. What could the tranny do to bog it? It shifts and drives smooth....

Transmission is your most likely culprit.

However, you said you have never driven another 250, so you don't have much to compare. If you are comparing it to the acceleration of a modern car, even a modestly powered one, it may be that the acceleration you are experiencing is normal. The 250 is not a powerful car; in fact, to say acceleration is "adequate" is probably being charitable. It is the classic case of a lot of car and not much engine.

That said, it should pull hills okay and not lose speed in lower gears.

If the transmission is okay, a compression check is the next thing I would try. If your engine is losing compression because or worn rings, it will also be losing power.

How many miles on the motor?

It has 105k original miles. What could be wrong with the tranny?

It could be broke.

Have you checked the fluid level? That's always a place to start.

Even if the fluid level is okay, the next thing I would do is change the fluid and filter. It's maintenance that should happen along about 50-60k miles, but you have a 42 year-old car. The transmission may never have had routine maintenance, may have had routine maintenance 30 years ago, may have had routine maintenance 10 years ago. All of those are WAY too much time to leave fluid in the case and rely on it to do its work. In the process of changing the fluid, a good shop will adjust the bands and do other non-repair work to make the tranny work better.

If none of that helps, see the first sentence.

Good luck.

Oh, if you would take time to fill out your profile, knowing where you are might help you find someone nearby who is a good mechanic or who has a car like yours and can help.

It's not bogging, it's slipping.

If it was slipping the motor would rev up. the motor slows down right along with it. Never had any weird noises from the tranny and it shifts fine. It bogs going up hill. I know it takes a lot of power to pull 4300 lbs up a hill but it should go up smooth in 2nd gear.....my tranny is a 4 speed on the column by the way so I dont think it has any filters to change.
