Does your odometer not reaad to 999,999.9 miles? My '72 W108 did, I think. If so, it may have been disconnected or broken for a period. In any event, it's unlikely 64k is right.
I think what Flyboy was asking and what I said are unless you have some reason to think the short block needs repair it is an awfully expensive part to replace on spec. It was a different engine, but from the same era in my '72 W108--it was the 4.5l V-8, but I distinctly remember asking the service writer when the car had 150k miles on it (and was 1983 then) when it would need a bottom-end rebuild. He suggested that I might need valve guides for the heads, but that he had been at that dealership 15 years, and he had never seen the bottom end of a Mercedes 4.5l V-8 engine. Realizing dealers don't do a lot of rebuild work, I still thought that was an extraordinary statement.
I don't know if the 250 engine is as robust, but it is plenty tough. I don't know if the engine in your car is as good as, better than, or worse than most like it. It just seems the odds are you won't need to rebuild the bottom of the motor--ever. If that's the case, why go to the expense?
