movin on up, er i mean down...

first ill start by saying i'm a newbie to the vintage thread.

I love my w123, but it was quite the bondo bucket, and ive been searching for a replacement for a while. I found one, but it wasn't what i expected.

Its a w115. a 300d auto to be precise. total and complete creampuff, and the guy's basically giving it away for 1300, because he's that desperate. my only question...im aware it's going to be slower than my turbo 300, no big deal. but i've heard about a slug of a slow-shifting three speed automatic that came in all US spec 300s. slow shifting i can deal with; gear ratios and top speed, however, have me worried. i do mostly freeway driving..ie at least 55. will a three speed auto 115 DO 55? or 65? or 70? (without putting undue stress on the engine of course)...

driving 55 everywhere isnt a problem, i do that anyways for gas mileage, even though my current 300dt can break 100 no problem (take THAT 240 owners!)...

i guess my question is, exactly what should i expect from the three speed being used to the 722.4?

It will do 55.... 65....70....80 although you will have to exercise patience especially when merging. Factory published 0-62 mph time is approximately 20.6 seconds from a standstill.
Top speed is claimed to be 92 mph (US versions are 89 mph) from the 80 DIN hp rating / 77 hp SAE.

Stay tuned for Stewie.... he has first-hand knowledge of how swift the 115 300Ds are (aka 240D 3.0 for euro-spec). Happy cruising!

Its not a 3 speed like we said in the other thread.

It can do 85MPH but thats pushing it. I cruise about 70-75 and it does fine.

Actually merging really isn't that bad.

I love mine

'79 280CE with 226,000 miles
'76 240D 4 speed with 190,000
'85 300D Turbo with 266,000 miles

GONE but not forgotten
'76 300D with 195,300 miles
"83 300D with 174,000 miles

Of course you do.... it's your car. We all learn to live with or like what we have because our diesel 115s and 123s are what they are in stock form.
You're patient Stew... I seen how you drive. For the most part, you're not an offensive driver which is good.
