You are not doing anything wrong that I can ascertain. That appears to be the proper serial number for your vehicle.

If you' re trying to decode it in the MB Russian Club VIN website then you can stop... it's too old to work there. Best bet is to contact MB Classic Center and request for your build card (deciphered) and be prepared to provide them with proof of ownership as part of their standard procedures. Good luck, and post pics!

The Russian site only goes back to 1974, I think. It goes back to whatever year global VINs became 17 numbers and letters.

From the site... although sometimes you can get lucky on a 1979 model, hit or miss.

Note: The VIN decoder only recognizes VINs of vehicles manufactured after 1980.

The old type of decoding this gives:
108=W108 sedan chassi
018=280 SE type
1=left hand drive
2=automatic gearbox
096348= serial number.

Your car should have a "datacard" available through a dealer, or optionally a datacard in your papers, and/or also a equipment badge on the front member by the radiator.

1991 W140 400 SE - SOLD !!
1973 W115 200 -For sale as project.
