I'm going through the same problem with my 72 350sl with a 4.5 . It would roll over and hit every once in a while but not start. I pulled all the plugs, disconnected power to the fuel pump, turned the motor over for about 15 seconds to dry the cylinders, and put it back together It started right up, but immediately started to flood out. After I shut it down it went back to not starting again. So you may have the same problem I do. If I can figure it out I'll let you know.

No problem. I know what you mean about the weather its not much better in NW Arkansas. I just received a string about checking the points. You can check out all the info I got in the roadster forum section for 1971-1989 SL cars on down the forum. After wrote the top part of this the temp warmed up into the mid 30's so I decided to check the vacuum lines and I found the line from the MAP to the back of the engine was broke. So for a test check I taped the hose together and cranked up the engine, it run a lot better now, only a little rich but not rough any more. Before I do any more I'm going to replace that line.

Ok.. I'm kind of confused on which route I should take.. because I dont yet hav enough money to purchase a new fuel pump relay, but its possible it may not be that, correct? Robbin, any suggestions on what I should do exactly first? Sorry, and again, thank you for your advice, it is very helpful.
And David, thanks a bunch, hav a safe, and fun New Year!

The first thing I would do is make sure you are getting gas to the engine, by removing a fuel line at the engine. If you do have gas getting to the engine I would then change the vacuum line from the MAP unit to the engine. I would also check the fuel pressure at the pressure regulator. I'm learning all this by reading what I can find on this site and books. I'm new at Benz I usually work on Suzuki and Ford. Try to google 1972 Mercedes 4.5 engine repair, then go to the title 280 SE 4.5 engine trouble, read over all three pages. That is how I found this site.

So... I am about to load it on the ramps and follow the wiring to find out whichever fuse block it is, that powers the fuel system.
