Hmmm Grubeguy, no, the thought of a front wheel drive V8 swap in. Depending on the target car it could be possible. Problems to think about would be:
- Subframe. It would be difficult to mount a gearbox and v8 (or straight 8) into the front of any car. Most FWD cars have an east west configuration engine so real estate up front would be at one hell of a premium.
- Steering and suspension. I cant begin to imagine how many problems there would be in this department. Suspension would have to be sooooo stiff to handle the weight of an 8 plus the box up front.
- Plumbing. Fitting a fuel system and exhaust (especially the manifolds) would be one hell of a job and something I would never consider.
I did see an alfa romeo in a mate's workshop a few weeks back that had the gearbox right at the rear of the car, and ran a diff setup very similar to that of a jaguar (unspung brakes and axles with IRS). I would love to entertain the idea of a rear mount gearbox somewhere in the future. I think it would produce a very well balanced car, aside from when its carrying a full tank of fuel.
You are dead right about the 351. I havent seen a W108/W109 with one in it, only a 302 and a 289 but the sump is a very similar shape in all three and would fit nicely into those models of Mercedes.
For those that havent seen my car, here's a recent picture, taken last weekend at Western Australia's biggest car show - Motorvation. She won the cool cruiser award there.
