G,

Your killing me, great looking engine. I have to repaint my car now, I wasn't planning too except to clean up some spots in the engine bay.

My first step is simply to remove the engine and start rebuilding the front end of the car just like you did. Nothing fancy, just surface rust removal, repaint black, replace rubber and then once that's all back together figure out the new engine install.

I'd like to lower the car, just a bit, it should look totally factory except in the engine bay. Interior totally stock with a stealth killer radio install. I need to stop talking and get to work!

hahahahaha, thanks so much Ricardo. Its been a hell of a lot of work to get to that stage - over 2600 hours so far - but its starting to pay off. The front end is pretty easy to rebuild and will happend very quickly for you if you order your rubbers ahead of time. My front end rebuild took less than a month. As for lowering, I would wait until you have your new engine in first. I plan on cutting my springs as the ride height of my car has remained almost exactly the same as it was with the Merc 6 in it - pretty unbelievable but that's Merc engineerig for you. I have a 109 here as well with factory ari bags but dont want to destroy a perfectly good, original 109 just so I can bag my 108. I'll stick with the chopped springs until I have saved enough cash to get a new air bag kit.

Taking the first step is tough, especially if its a running and registered car but once you start you'll find yourself wanting to just get it done which helps move things along. My only words of davice are to plan your build in stages, plan ahead with parts and ask a lot of questions if you arent sure about something (which Im sure you will do anyway).

Looking forward to watching your build mate.

G

I can’t help myself but add that the car and myself have appeared in Street Machine magazine - one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) magazines in Australia, Zoom magazine ANOTHER big Australian modified car magazine and soon to be featured in Extreme Performance Magazine, ANOTHER big Australian modified car magazine. It also looks like the car has been accepted into the elite hall for Motorvation 25 - one of the top 60 cars chosen from over 1200 entries, in an event that has been running for 25 years this year. But I suppose you will turn around and say that they have no idea of what they are all talking about.

What about ANOTHER mate of mine from the east coast. Like me, saved a 108 from certain death, dropped a Ford 302 into it and turned it into a ute. I can just picture you cringing. It too is a work of art, of determination and going ahead when others say no or it just cant be done.

THANKYOU! Finally some sanity. I believe that this forum and others should be about helping each other, sharing information and ideas without being rediculed. That was the whole point of creating my build site, to give others the information they might be looking for if they every wanted to go down the path of a chev in a 108.

hahahhahah thanks bfrymire! I dropped it off at the engineering shop about 5 weeks ago to get the catch can and exhaust fabricated and an asian guy saw me turn up with the car on the trailer and ask me "how much" and I looked at him oddly, askign him back "what, for the car?" and he said yeah so I said jokingly "60 grand and its yours, as is". He didnt even bat an eyelid, asked for my contact details and said he would get in contat with me. I dont think I will sell it till Ive had some fun with it and even then it is probably something that will stay in the family for years to come yet.

Out of curiosity, what are driving?

Actually several cars:

1966 MB 200 (Just got this one, and have some interesting plans. This car has been in my family since new! Have the original bill of sale.)

1973 Porsche 914 (2.7 Six)
1974 Porsche 914 (Subaru STI conversion in progress)
2003 Nissan 350Z
1991 Alfa Romeo 164S
2007 Audi A4

Yes, I have too many cars!

I really want to see pictures when your car is finished. Good luck with the build. It's going great!
