Post Diesel or Turbo Diesel

Hello everyone:

I am wanting to enter the world of Vintage Mercedes. I have located a 1977 240D w/77K automatic but it is 3 hours from me. I have read that the 240 is a diesel slug but one of the best powertrains Mercedes ever put in a vehicle. If this is true is there a Turbo diesel in this same body style that you would consider to be the equivilant to the 240D as far as dependibility and longevity?

I commute 85 miles a day to work and back and really like the body style of the 240D I've been looking at. I know there are a few common problems like odoemters, door seals and rust. Are there any other common issues?

With odometers being common to fail or intermittently fail, how can I verify mileage? Carfax doesn't got this far back. Do you know if Mercedes customer service can pull records this old for any previous repairs to try to get an idea of mileage?

I work in the automotove extended warr. industry so I'm pretty car savy but older Mercedes are not my most knowledgeable subject.

Any help would be appreciated.

There is a seperate W123 subforum, read and you can see what to expect.

Apart from the 240D, there is a (non-turbo) 300D and a 300D turbo. They are all pretty reliable, depending on proper maintenance.

Just remember that the non turbo ones are clocked with a calendar. If you have access to a turbo'd one, go for it. MUCH more pickup!
