Advice on purchasing: 1979 450SEL $600

Hey,
Ive been around cars my entire life mostly built Hondas and american cars. Now im looking to change it up and go Euro. Ive been shopping around for a lil while now and just came across a 1979 450SEL Mint cond. The only downfall is that it has 267,xxx miles. The up is its at a police auction and only $600. Wondering if i can get some opinions on this, good buy? The milage worries me. Is there anything that i may not pick up on that i should look for?

It's well known that there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes.

You have to realize that most, if not all, the rubber bits will need to be replaced. There will be rust, therre will be engine repairs. You have no experience with Mercedes and you cannot just pop on down to the local parts store and pick up some parts.

If you are interested in the car ask for a PPI. Browse the vintage section or W116 sections, of various forums, MBCA and Peachparts for instance.

PPI is a great idea, and I realize that parts are not easy to find, nor are they cheap. I do have a few grand laying around for replacing things like the rubber bits etc... not that it will get me far buying mercedes parts. i will def. look into the sites you suggested.

Thanks,

And still welcoming more input

I say go for it! The price may be low because it was a siezed asset. As for milage, Benz engines are known for their durability. Something with 267k miles isn't necessarily worn out yet.

Do you have the option of doing compression tests or such? Have you been able to examine it for rust?

$600 you can't go wrong the wheels should get you $200 back depending on the interior engine etc... you can get $600 back ebaying parts off it. That's of course only if there is a major problem after you by it like a rod bearing or tranny being shot. You can still recoupe your investment and might even make some money. On the other hand if the car's engine is sound you can years more driving out of it. The police auctions I been too they don't let you start car and most times they don't have keys even they expect car to be towed away that day. You never know it may go for less $600 if no on bids. I bought a 1980 chevy truck at auction for $100 starting bid was $500 and it dropped to $50 before first bid I bid second at $100 and won. Drove truck for 4 years put about 80,000 miles on it not bad for $100. My benz I got on Ebay for $300 plus $100 to transport and about $700 in repair parts which included new fuel tank, fuel distributor, fuel injectors, fuel pump, fuel filters, spark plug wires, air filter, spark plugs, cap rotor, heater radiator hoses, AC drier, AC exapansion valve , floor pan, 4 wheels and tires, steering wheel sheepskin covers. Had I known then what I know know I would have parted it out but even still , I have driven it for 1.5 years and have put 30,000 mile on it and it's a great little car.

I say go for it if it's a basket case part it out if is worth saving fix it up.
