From my house to LAX is 235 miles. The 06 beetle was getting 30 mpg going 65 mph and 24 doing 80 mph keeping up with traffic all the way to the 405. Total time 3:15 min. Again, no traffic. The Tacoma was clocking 21 mpg same time.
The old girl, despite it's age, does pretty good too. 19 mpg on premium. But what a trip back in time... The thing I feared the most was not the fact that she could brake down, because everything that could brake has been replaced, or have a flat tire (tires are new and I had a spare). It was the wind over the Grapevine... with a vertical windshield and the aerodynamics of an open parachute, 55 mph up the hill was a work out. Overtaking trucks was an adventure: the minute I hit the front wind wave, it was like been hit by storm! Going down the hill the far right lane I felt safe, safe as in as they won't floss me out of the teeth of a semi... Trip takes extra time, 45 min extra, but it doesn't bother me. I had people wave, flash their lights, honk, tailgate, so they could take a peak
Took some pictures outside of the Proud Bird, and some just outside of Bakersfield on the way back home. Turns out a cool dude with his wife and their early 50's Dodge resto mod pick-up followed me for 50 miles or so... then they just flew by...at least I was not alone.
Never overheated, even when the 405 N bound was jammed at 8 am... 10 miles in 40 min. You have to really watch your distance from the guy in front of you, but other than that it was just another trip to work. I had someone email me and tell me that she is all looks and not glory... This is for you. I do this trip twice a month. Been doing it for the past 6 months, ever since I sold the VW. If I ever sold her, she will go to someone that will not part her out. I can part her out... because she belongs to me and that is the only way I will get my money back, plus a little more... but not much
It's not always about the money. Wait until you see the bumpers. If things get worst and have to drive every week, $120 in gas every week would be a problem. But will cross that bridge I get to it. Would not hesitate to drive her coast to coast. Period. She was built to cruise and I am returning the favor... Enjoy the pictures
