'76 300D -- won't start after a month away

Hi all,

I went away on vacation for a month and when I came back my 300D wouldn't start. A month ago I had no engine/start issues at all. Symptoms:

On-dash glowplug light works as normal. Battery is still strong and starter seems to engage as long as I hold the key down. Once in a while at the first few attempts, there was the sound of fuel ignition, but only briefly. Now there is no sound of fuel ignition. Clear fuel line near manual fuel pump shows that there is fuel there (I pumped the manual fuel pump a few times to make sure it wasn't a dry line issue).

That's where I am. Fuel seems to be there, battery seems strong enough to turn it over and make the plugs glow... What could be wrong? (Did I possibly flood the engine? I mean, do fuel-injected diesels flood even? I did have that worry at first and left the car alone overnight, but this morning I had the same response.)

Thanks for any help,
AV

Your glowplugs probably are not working. I would chekck for power at each one.

Remember you have the old loop plugs, one burns out then none of them work.

Got any pictures of your W115?

merci mercy,

my chilton guide says i need to ground each glow plug with a screwdriver and see if there are sparks. no sparks means bad plug. is that about right?

(i tried putting an pic of the car in my sig, let's see if it works...)

Don't use a screwdriver, it damages your glow relais.

Use a voltage meter instead. Measure the voltage at each plug.

You can also use a current clamp, current should be between 50 and 55 Ampere.
