they are both amazing cars no doubt but i would choose the coupe because they look very clean and elegant with the Roof in place, those timeless Paul Bracq lines look that much better with coupe. The icing on the cake would be the fact the coupe is pillar less
Such a theoretical question - the typical cabriolet is at least five times the price of a comparable condition coupe. They were similar in price in 1971, and anyone who chose a coupe lost out big time.

have both, and both are great cars. 62 220 SE Cab and a 71 280 SE 3.5 Coupe. I am having much the same problem because the coupe is soooo much more practical unless of course you live in someplace like carmel CA, which of course I don't, and of course allows me to afford more than one car... anyways. The convertible is great for perfect days, and of course feels great with that top down, but the windows and top not being power are a real pain when you stop somewhere and feel the need to raise everything. The coupe is very practical and looks just as good to me style wise. i just got it, so I am still getting used to it, but I really feel I will drive it more. It does have a sunroof, so that makes it all the more a dual purpose car. I will probably sell the cabriolet, as I have other convertibles to drive on the rare occasions that we have amazing weather( 280SL and a Morris Conv). They are much cheaper cars, and selling the cabriolet will put some $$$ back into my pocket. It is a tough call, and really depends on your use. If it is your only classic car and you are looking for just 1 car to own that you take out on special days, the Cabriolet is probably it. If you intend to use it quite a bit, maybe even drive it half the time as your daily driver, the coupe is the hands down winner.
