Really, it's not that much better on any 30+ years old car..
If you want a Mercedes with little or no rust, go for a R129, a W140 or a late W211..
But I guess that's out of your prize-range then...
My car was completly driveable when I bought it. A small brake-job a few small holes in the sills and floor, and the car would have been fine..
But I want to do a complete restoration.. So, I "dig in" to the metal..
This way I get all the facts on the table, and can put them in the best working order possible.
My car cost me 2100 USD when bought.. But I got my hands on two new front fenders, two sill's, 4 barock wheel's, windshield with shading, rear window with heater, new inner-front-wing protective covers and a few other items.. Thus hitting the 3100 USD mark.
Later I've bought new bushings all round, new brake-lines and hoses, new calipers, new wheel-bearings, new brake-disc's, brake-shields and so on... Totaling on 9.300 USD so far..
