'72 280SE Air filter housing

Morning all,

My air filter housing is on the way out, it will only seal on 2 sides now, creating a lovely noise when the car is running.

Looking at the unit, it seems pretty large and I was wondering if anyone had managed to fit a more modern, 3rd party air filter onto their 280SE's?

If it was a straight filter, there wouldn't be a problem, but the 280SE has a secondary pipe, so that causes an issue.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Is this a 4.5? If yes, you also have the D-jetronic air temp sensor located in front of the air filter housing to take into consideration.

No, this is the 3.5, so no air sensor to contend with

Well, the 3.5 and 4.5 are basically the same engines both with a D jetronic system and an air sensor on the air filter housing. Is your engine an in-line six cylinders with the air filter housing in front and on the right of the engine bay, or a V8 with a big flat round air filter housing on top of it?

The secondary pipe is for the fumes out of the valve cover, I guess. You can replace it with one of these funny kind of mushrooms we see sometimes on american V8s. You can then put some kind of K&N filter in front of the throttle body. But the original system is quite well studied: it sucks cold air in front of the radiator in a location which is under quite some pressure when speeding helping a better filling of the cylinder. Air is then admitted in the round housing where it rotates (hence creating further acceleration) while being sucked through the filter. An aftermarket replacement may end up in some loss of power. I don't know what's wrong with your housing, apart from some clips that may have gone wrong? I would consider repairing it or replacing it by a used one.

Wow very useful information, thank you!

will see if it can be fixed, I'm based in South Africa, so Merc tend to charge a fortune here for parts.

Thanks again all
