280se 4.5 m117 engine number

So I'm looking at getting a 1971 280se 4.5, and was wondering how i could tell if the engine is the 8.8:1 or the 8:1? is there a number on the block somewhere?

The three numbers after the 117 will tell you, along with a reference book on the different engine types. The are in the form 117.9nn-12-zzzzzz with nn being the variation of the engine, the 12 for left hand drive and automatic and the zzzzzz the serial number. For instance:

W116 web site:

www.w116.org

engine data

Technical data

I hope this helps

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant
