I think your friend has an inflated value of the car, particularly in this economy. That's bad for you, because it means you will either pay too much or your friend will feel like he gave you a really good deal when in fact he probably didn't. My opinion is that it would be better for someone other than you to help him set the price. Perhaps an ebay auction! If he thinks he's going to get $12k for it on ebay then he SHOULD. If nothing else, he could put it on ebay with a reserve of $12k and then sell it to you when it doesn't meet the reserve. At least that way everyone has a better idea of what the "market value" of the car is, and you don't end up in the position of having a friend do you a financial favor in his mind that really isn't one...
